“It is rare to find buildings that truly appreciate their surroundings and elevate them within the context of architecture. The Keras Cliff House in Agia Galini, Crete, does so in stunning fashion, blending landscape, material, and cultural elements effortlessly to provide an unforgettable experience for the visitor.

Approaching the villa from afar, one notices how its stretched-out, single-story structure embraces the edge of the cliff. Two elongated bars create a wedge, roughly outlining the curved topography of the platform on which the building sits. Passing through the entrance, the glass facades act like curtains pulled back to reveal stunning panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea. The architect's vision becomes clear: to introduce an unobtrusive, inhabitable threshold that heightens the effect of the vistas as one navigates through and around it.

The front of the villa is organized around an infinity pool, which works within an ensemble of patios and outdoor spaces that cut through the building's wings. This partial dissolution between inside and outside not only allows for the uninhibited circulation of air and people but also offers a contemporary take on traditional courtyards in Minoan architecture—a cultural reference further enhanced by a sculpture depicting the Horns of Consecration at the villa's entrance.

Materially, the house blends local rock and stone with bold concrete, which provides the structural elements needed for the generous spacing and wide overhangs that characterize Keras. Appearing simultaneously modern and regional, the villa never feels formulaic, instead surprising with countless thoughtful details, hidden views, and spatial nooks that invite one to linger and contemplate the natural beauty and historical relevance of this place.

Having had the opportunity to spend a week at Keras Cliff House in fall 2025, I was reminded of what architecture, at its best, can do: create an environment in which natural and built matter combine to produce a cohesive habitat catering equally to the senses and the intellect.”

“Keras Cliff House was an absolute dream setting for a writing retreat — inspiring, restorative, and quietly magnificent.

The setting alone — perched above the Libyan Sea — creates an immediate sense of calm and focus, but it’s the combination of privacy, thoughtful design, and understated luxury that truly makes the difference.

Every space felt intentional: perfect for deep focus, reflective walks, intimate group discussions, and moments of solitude when the work demanded it.

The luxurious amenities balanced the intensity of writing days with true indulgence, making it easy to recharge both mind and body.

I fell in love with this place, and I know, without a doubt, that the writers who join me here will feel the same way.

Keras isn’t just a destination. It’s a rare place that truly supports creative work, and I can’t wait to return for future retreats.”

“Keras Cliff House is very much a place that feels as if it exists in its own cinematic universe. Much like the iconic villa in Godard’s Contempt, on another Mediterranean island, Capri, it seems less like a location than a presence, waiting for a story to unfold around it.

It is a special place where striking architecture meets nature, history, and mythology going back millennia. The eye meets nothing but olive groves and the piercing blue of the Aegean Sea. I felt an almost constant urge to sit down and write while I was there, something about the space nourishes the mind and soul, inspires introspection, and rejuvenates the senses. Keras is a place where the ancient muses feel close by, inviting one to listen and to meditate.

This time, however, my reason for being there was different. I was traveling with my family, my six-month-old daughter, my husband, and my parents. That brought another kind of fulfillment and a different kind of magic. We could not have chosen a more meaningful place to unite as a family and to introduce a new being to the sea and the sun. It felt like the beginning of a new family ritual.

Being there also allowed us to be outside with our daughter at a moment when New York had already begun to slip into its long season of cold and darkness. That felt both like a gift and a luxury.

We are deeply grateful to Patrick for creating such an extraordinary space and experience, and to Serhat and Hamza for making our stay so seamless and warm, and for welcoming us so generously. We cannot wait to return to Crete and to Keras, and who knows, perhaps next time to write a script or even to make a film.”

“I spent the first week of May 2026 at Keras Cliff House with friends and was nothing but thrilled!

Not only did the unique sea view location inspire me as an architect. Keras Cliff House on the south coast of Crete impresses with a fine balance between timeless elegance, regional color scheme and exquisite choice of materials.

The single-storey building is organically placed into a cliff projection where closed rooms and outdoor seating areas follow the natural terrain in a large linear construction. Extensive walls made from multicolored Cretan silica stone, large windows, and high ceilings and walls made from visible concrete are the three key elements of Keras Cliff House. These elements create an attractive visual relationship that interplays between indoor and outdoor spaces and captures the sensational view of the sea.

The balanced ratio between closed to transparent surfaces of the building envelope may cover Feng Shui rules. Everyone can find a quiet and protected place in the house without sacrificing the magnificent view. The central lounge area, consisting of an entrance zone with an old olive tree, the Minoan horns, a designer kitchen, dining area and studio, extends over several levels with generous room heights and glass surfaces, which invite a variety of views of the sea and the adjacent coastal landscape.

The ‘sleeping wing’ with four air-conditioned rooms is exquisitely equipped with practically divided built-in furniture and en-suite bathrooms with double sinks. Keras Cliff House is so well composed and inviting that there is little desire for undertaking excursions. Rather one seeks peace and relaxation in and around the spacious house.

As a critical architect with a trained eye for proportion and detail, I was pleased that no architectural opportunities were squandered at this wonderful location. Our stay was an architectural week full of inspiration and well-being.”

“We spent the first week of May with friends at the Keras Cliff House near Agia Galini in the south of Crete. There, the landscape is characterized by steep cliffs, green, yellow and brown slopes, and the deep blue sea that blends with the lighter blue of the sky and the snow-capped peaks of the central mountain range.

Keras Cliff House captures the sensory elements of the surroundings in a harmonious geometric composition, thereby lending the landscape’s striking character maximum aesthetic expression through the spatial condensation and intensification of its play of colours and materials within an architectural framework of rigour.

Anyone seeking inspiration – be it for a strategy, a musical piece, a business concept, reading or writing a book, or similar – will find in this place the strength to summon their very best.”
